ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cortical dysplasia

Cortical dysplasia is a big word that means there might be something different about the part of a person's brain that controls how they see, hear, move, think and feel. When we are growing inside our mom's belly, our brains are making lots of connections that help us learn and do things. Sometimes, things can go wrong and the brain might not grow the right way in certain spots.

Just like how we all have different faces and hair, everyone's brain is different too. Some people with cortical dysplasia might not notice any difference at all in their everyday life, while others might have trouble with things like speaking, understanding what people say, or moving their arms and legs like they want to.

A doctor can use special machines to take pictures of the brain and see if there are any differences. Sometimes doctors can even make the differences go away with medicine or surgery.

No matter what, it's important to remember that everyone's brain is special and nobody ever has to feel different because of it.
