ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Council tax

Imagine you live in a big house with lots of other people and you all share the garden and the toys. To keep everything nice and tidy, your parents ask everyone to put some money in a pot every month. This money is used to buy new toys, take care of the garden and pay for the cleaners who keep your house tidy. This is kind of like council tax!

When you grow up and have your own house, you will also have to pay council tax to the people who take care of your town or city. This money is used to help pay for things like schools, police, fire fighters, parks and libraries that everyone can use.

The amount of council tax you pay depends on the value of your house and the area you live in. The more valuable your house, the more council tax you will have to pay. It's like if you have a bigger toy box, you have to put more money into the pot to make sure it stays clean and tidy!

So, by paying council tax, you are helping to make sure that everyone in your town or city has nice things to use, and that the people who keep it all working can do their jobs.
