Counting in music is like a way to keep track of the rhythm or beat of a song. It helps us know when to tap our foot, clap our hands or sing along.
Imagine you are sitting in your class and your teacher says, "Let's clap our hands together 4 times." She then claps her hands 1, 2, 3, 4, and you are supposed to do the same. That is counting!
In music, instead of clapping hands, we use numbers or syllables to keep track of the beat. We start with 1 and keep going until we finish the measure or phrase. For example, if we are playing or singing a song that has four beats in a measure or phrase, then we count "1, 2, 3, 4" and start over.
It's like having a special language to talk about music. By counting, we can work together as a group to play music in sync and sound great!
