ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Counts per minute

Okay kiddo, have you ever played a game where you count how many times you can jump in a minute? That’s sort of like what counts per minute mean!

Sometimes, scientists want to count tiny particles or rays, like radiation, that move really fast - too fast for us to count them one by one. So, they use a machine called a Geiger counter. This machine clicks every time it notices a particle or ray, and is able to count how many times it clicks in one minute.

That number is called “counts per minute”. So, if the Geiger counter clicked 60 times in one minute, that means there were 60 particles or rays moving through the detector in that minute. It’s an important way scientists know how much radiation is around, and if it’s safe for people and animals to be nearby.
