ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crest (physics)

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a wave in the ocean? The highest part of the wave is called the crest.

Now imagine that instead of water waves, we're talking about sound waves or light waves. These waves have crests too!

In physics, a crest is the highest point of a wave. It's where the energy of the wave is concentrated. When a wave moves through a medium (like air, water, or even a guitar string), it creates crests and troughs (the lowest point of a wave).

Did that make sense, kiddo? So next time you see a wave in the ocean, remember that it has a crest just like the waves of sound and light!
