ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Criminal citation

Hi there, have you ever heard of a ticket? You know, like the one you get for not wearing your seatbelt in the car? Well, a criminal citation is kind of like a ticket that a police officer can give you if they think you did something wrong in a more serious way.

Let's say you were caught stealing something from a store. The police officer might give you a criminal citation, which is a piece of paper that tells you what you did wrong, and gives you a date to go to court to explain what happened.

It's like your teacher giving you a note to take home to your parents except instead of going to your parents, you have to go to court to see a judge. The judge will listen to your side of the story and then decide what punishment, if any, you will get.

So, a criminal citation is basically a warning that tells you that you could face serious punishment if you do something wrong by breaking the law. It's important to always follow the rules and the law to avoid getting a criminal citation!
