ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cross-tolerance

Cross-tolerance happens when your body gets used to one type of medicine, so it doesn't work as well anymore, but it also makes your body better at handling another type of medicine that works in a similar way.

Here's an example: imagine you are a kid and you really like sugar. You eat so much candy every day that your body starts to get used to it and you don't feel the sugar rush as much anymore. But then, one day, you start eating lots of fruit instead of candy. Even though fruit also has sugar, your body is better at handling it because it has been used to dealing with so much sugar from the candy. So you don't get as hyper from the fruit as you would have if you hadn't been eating candy.

The same thing can happen with medicines. If you take one type of painkiller for a long time, your body can get used to it so it doesn't work as well. But then if you switch to a different type of painkiller that works in a similar way, your body might be better at handling it because it has already built up a tolerance to the first one.

It's important to be careful with medicines and only take them as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. If you start taking too much of a medicine or taking it too often, you can build up a tolerance more quickly and it can become dangerous.
