Cuarenta Casas is a really cool place that is very old and was built by a group of people a long, long time ago called the Ancient Puebloans. They built these houses in the side of cliffs using rocks and mud. These houses were called Cuarenta Casas, which means "forty houses" in Spanish. However, there were actually more than 40 houses there, but people just called it that name because it sounded better.
The Ancient Puebloans built these houses in the cliffs because they wanted to protect themselves from enemies and also because it was a good place to live where they could grow things like corn, beans, and squash. They also built a really cool system of water channels so they could have water for drinking and to grow their crops. These water channels were called acequias.
Nowadays, Cuarenta Casas is a place where people can go and visit to see how the Ancient Puebloans lived a long time ago. They can see the houses they built in the cliffs, the acequias they made for water, and even see some of the designs they put on the walls of their houses. It's a really neat place to learn about history and see how people used to live a long, long time ago.
