ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cuban Spanish

Okay kiddo, imagine that there's a place far away called Cuba. The people who live there speak a language called Spanish, just like we do. But sometimes they say things a little bit differently than we do, sort of like how some kids in school might use different words or speak with an accent.

For example, instead of saying "hola" for hello, someone from Cuba might say "qué bola" which means "what's up". They also like to use lots of slang words that we might not be familiar with.

Another thing that's unique about Cuban Spanish is their way of speaking really quickly and cutting off words. Sometimes they'll even merge words together, like "¿cómo estás?" which means "how are you?" can become "cómo ta'?"

But don't worry, even though they speak a little differently, people from Cuba are still able to understand and communicate with other Spanish speakers from different parts of the world. It's just like how we can still understand each other even if we speak with different accents or use different words.
