Okay, kiddo, today we're going to learn about customs and etiquette in Japanese dining!
In Japan, there are some important rules when it comes to eating with family, friends or strangers. It's not just about the food, it's about respecting the culture and showing good manners.
Firstly, when entering a Japanese restaurant, it's always polite to say "irasshaimase" which means "welcome". Then, you will be guided to your table, where you need to take off your shoes and place them in a designated area.
Once you're seated, remember to say "itadakimasu" which means "I humbly receive" as a way of giving thanks and appreciation for the food. You should also wait for everyone to receive their food before beginning to eat.
When using chopsticks, make sure you do not point or stab them into your food, or pass food directly with them from your chopsticks to someone else's. Additionally, do not rub the chopsticks together, as it is considered an insult to the quality of the restaurant's utensils.
It's also polite to hold the bowl close to your mouth when eating soup or rice, and to not leave any food on your plate as it shows that you haven't enjoyed the meal.
Finally, when you've finished eating, say "gochisousama deshita" which means "thank you for the meal" and leave some money on the tray or at the reception.
By following these manners, you will show respect for the Japanese culture and have a more enjoyable dining experience!
