Cythara

Okay, so imagine a really really really old guitar. Like, even older than your grandparents. That's what a cythara is. It's kind of like a mix between a guitar and a lyre (which is like a mini harp).

It has a wooden body that's shaped like an oval or a pear, and it has a sound hole in the middle. The strings go from the top of the body, over a bridge, and down to the bottom of the body. They're usually made out of animal guts (yuck!) or silk.

People would play the cythara by plucking the strings with their fingers or with a pick. They would make beautiful music and sing songs while they played.

Nowadays, we don't really use cytharas anymore because we have newer, more modern instruments like guitars and pianos. But it's still really cool to learn about and see pictures of!
