When we talk about d, we are talking about a type of number called a decimal. A decimal is a number that has a point, or dot, in it, after the ones place (ones column). This dot separates the whole part of the number (the part to the left of the dot) from the part with the decimal places (the part to the right of the dot). Decimals are used to show parts of a number that are less than 1, such as 0.5 or 0.25.
