ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

DADGAD

Dadgad is a way to tune a guitar so that it sounds different than how it usually sounds. Imagine you have a box of crayons and you usually draw with them in a certain order. But with dadgad, you can rearrange the crayons in a different order and make a new picture!

When you play guitar normally, the strings are usually tuned to E, A, D, G, B, and E again. But with dadgad, you change some of the strings to different notes. Instead of being tuned to E, the thinnest string (or highest pitch) on the guitar is tuned to D. The next string down (thicker and slightly lower pitch) is tuned to A. The third string down is tuned to the same note as the first string, which is D. The fourth string down is tuned to the same note as the second string, which is another A. The fifth string down is tuned to G, but the sixth and thickest string is also tuned to D, like the first and third strings.

This creates a new sound when you play the guitar because the strings now make different types of vibrations when you strum them. It can make some notes sound bigger, or certain chords sound easier to play. It's like putting a different puzzle together, but with sound!

Dadgad is often used by guitar players who play folk or Celtic music, but you can try it out and see if it works for you! Just remember, when you want to go back to your regular tuning, it's like putting the crayons back in their normal order.
