ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

DNS spoofing

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you want to visit a website like YouTube or Facebook, you type the website address in the address bar in your internet browser? Well, the address you type in, like www.youtube.com, is actually a special code that gets translated into a computer address (like an address for a house) so that your computer knows where to find the website you want to visit.

Now, sometimes bad guys on the internet want to trick your computer into going to a different website than the one you really wanted to visit. They do this by something called DNS spoofing.

DNS stands for domain name system, which is like a big address book for the internet. When you type in a website address, your computer asks a DNS server to look up the correct computer address for that website. But if the bad guys can trick your computer into talking to a fake, bad DNS server instead of the real one, they can make your computer think that a fake website is the real one you wanted to visit.

So, always be careful when visiting websites online! Make sure you are typing in the right address and that your computer isn't being tricked by a bad DNS server.
