ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Damning with faint praise

Okay, kiddo, let me try to explain this to you. Have you ever heard someone say something nice about someone else, but the way they said it made it sound not so nice? That's what we call "damning with faint praise."

For example, let's say your friend made a painting that you didn't really like. But you don't want to hurt their feelings, so you say "wow, you used a lot of colors!" Now, that might sound like a compliment, but it's actually a way of saying you didn't like the painting very much.

So, "damning with faint praise" is sort of like giving a backhanded compliment. It's when someone says something nice, but it's not really that nice. It might even be a way of criticizing someone without them realizing it.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
