Danse Macabre

Danse macabre is a type of dance that was popular in medieval Europe. It is also sometimes called “The Dance of Death” because it was often performed with a skeletal figure in a white robe and mask. The dancer would move around in a circle with other participants in a ritualistic style, and the idea was that the living people would be reminded of the inevitability of their own mortality. The danse macabre is sometimes described as a lesson about how all people are equal in death, no matter their status in life. It was meant to be a reminder to take advantage of life and be thankful for it, instead of spending it in pointless pursuits. Even nowadays, this idea can still be seen in some cultures where a skeleton is used to remind people to respect life and prepare for their eventual deaths.
