ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Data citation

Data citation is like giving credit to someone who helped you with a school project. Imagine you are working on a project, and you need to use some information that you found on the internet. You have to tell your teacher where you found the information so that he or she can verify it and make sure that you did not copy it from someone else.

Similarly, data citation means that you have to give credit to people who created or helped to create the data that you used for your project or research. That way, other people can find the same data and check it for themselves.

Just like how you would write down the author and the year of a book that you used to get information for your project, when you use data you need to provide information about who created the data, what it is, and when it was created. This information is called a citation.

Citing data is essential because it allows other people to verify the data and use it in their own research. It helps to acknowledge the hard work of the people who created the data and encourages them to make more data available for others to use.
