Day of the Little Candles

Imagine it's your birthday, and you want to celebrate it with your family and friends. You have some food, drinks, and decorations to make your home look beautiful. Similarly, in Colombia, people celebrate the Day of the Little Candles every year on December 7th.

It's a day where people light candles, decorate their homes and streets with lamps, and celebrate the upcoming Christmas season. The celebration started in honor of the Virgin Mary's immaculate conception which is a significant event in the Catholic religion.

The tradition began in the city of Popayan, where it's known as "La Noche de las Velitas" (The Night of the Little Candles). People light candles outside their homes, and the entire city glows with twinkling lights.

People also celebrate the day by exchanging gifts, singing carols, and enjoying traditional Colombian food such as tamales and hot chocolate. It's a day when people come together to spread happiness and love, just like how you celebrate your birthday with your loved ones.
