Delayed gratification is a way of making sure you get something good out of something in the future, rather than getting something good right away. Imagine you were going on a long car journey and your parent gives you the choice of either eating a snack right now, or waiting until you get to your destination and getting a bigger treat. Delayed gratification means that you choose the bigger treat even though you have to wait. It means making the decision to have a better result in the future instead of doing something now that might give you a quick result but might not be the best in the long run.
