ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Deliberate crash landings on extraterrestrial bodies

When we want to visit other planets or moons, we often send spaceships. These spaceships have to land on the surface of the planet or moon a bit like a airplane landing at an airport.

Sometimes, instead of landing very gently like a feather, we make the spaceship crash on purpose. This is called a "deliberate crash landing".

We might do this for different reasons, like to study the surface of the planet or moon up close.

When the spaceship crashes onto the surface, it creates a big impact. This creates a lot of dust and rock fragments that can be analyzed by scientists to learn more about the surface of the planet or moon.

The spaceship also takes pictures and sends them back to Earth so we can see what's there! This helps us learn a lot more about the planet or moon than if we just landed softly and took a few pictures.
