The Democracy Index is a way to score and measure how democratic a country is. It looks at the rules and laws of each country, and the way they respect the rights of their citizens, to work out a score. A high score means the country is closer to being a perfect democracy, while a low score means their democracy needs some improvement. Low scores can be because the people don’t get to choose their leaders, or because their basic rights aren’t respected. The higher a country’s score, the more democratic it is.
