ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dependency ratio

The Dependency Ratio is a way to measure the number of people who are dependent on other people to take care of them. It is usually used to compare different populations, like the number of working people to the number of people who are not working. The Dependency Ratio is the ratio of the number of people who are not working to the number of working people. So if there are 100 people, and 70 of them are working and 30 are not, then the Dependency Ratio is 0.3 (30 divided by 100). The lower the Dependency Ratio, the more people are working and taking care of themselves and the higher the Dependency Ratio, the more people there are who need someone else to take care of them.
