ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dependent-marking language

Dependent-marking language is a way of using grammatical markers, or bits of language, to show how different parts of a sentence are connected to each other.

Imagine you're playing with some building blocks, and you want to show that two blocks are connected to each other. You might use a small piece of plastic, like a connector, to snap the blocks together.

In a dependent-marking language, different parts of a sentence are like those building blocks, and the grammatical markers are like the connectors.

For example, in English, we might say something like, "I went to the store, but I forgot my wallet." The way we show that "I forgot my wallet" is connected to the first part of the sentence ("I went to the store") is by using the word "but" to link the two ideas together. We don't use any special grammatical markers to show this relationship, but the meaning is clear because of the context and the way the words are arranged.

In a dependent-marking language, though, there would be specific grammatical markers used to show how different parts of the sentence are connected.

For instance, in a language like Hindi, markers called "postpositions" are used at the end of words to show different relationships between things in a sentence. So instead of saying "I went to the store, but I forgot my wallet," you might say something like, "Main dukane gaya, lekin mera wallet bhool gaya." In this sentence, the word "lekin" (which is like the English word "but") shows the relationship between the two ideas. But there are also some other markers that show how different words are related - like "dukan-e" (which means "store" but includes an "-e" marker meaning "to" or "at") and "mera" (which means "my" but includes an "-a" marker meaning "of" or "belonging to").

In summary, a dependent-marking language is one where grammatical markers are used to show how different parts of a sentence are connected. These markers can come at the end of words or be used in other ways, and they help make it clear how the different parts of a sentence fit together.
