Deportation of the Karachays

Okay kiddo, so sometimes people from one country move to another country to live and work. But if they break the rules of the country they move to, they may have to go back to their own country. This is called deportation.

So a long time ago, in a country called Russia, there was a group of people called the Karachays. They lived in a place called the North Caucasus region, which is in the southern part of Russia.

But the leaders of Russia didn't like the Karachays because they thought the Karachays were helping some other people who were fighting against the Russian government.

So in 1943, the Russian government decided to deport all the Karachays to another part of Russia, far away from their home. This made the Karachays very sad and scared because they didn't know anyone in the new place they were being sent to, and they had to leave everything behind.

Many Karachays died during the journey to the new place, and those who survived had to start over and build new homes and lives. It was a very sad and unfair time for the Karachays, and they still remember it today.
