Okay kiddo, imagine your toy car is like a battery. When you play with your toy car a little bit and then put it away for a while, you still have some battery left to play with the next time.
In the same way, when you use a battery to power something like a phone or a car, you can use a little bit of the battery power and then recharge it later. But if you use too much of the battery power, the battery will run out and you won't be able to use it anymore until you recharge it.
Now, the "depth of discharge" is like how much of the battery power you use up before recharging it. If you use only a little bit of the battery's power before recharging it, that means you didn't discharge it very deeply. But if you use a lot of the battery's power before recharging it, that means you discharged it deeply.
So, just like you need to recharge your toy car's battery to keep playing with it, you need to recharge a real battery like a phone or a car's battery to keep using it. And how much you use of the battery's power before recharging it is called the "depth of discharge."
