Desert locust

Desert locusts are like really big grasshoppers that live in the desert. They have a special ability that other insects don’t have: they can change their behavior when they are close to each other. This means that when there are a lot of desert locusts in one place, they can turn from being solitary insects to being part of a big group.

When they form a big group, they start to eat a lot more. In fact, a group of just one square kilometer can eat as much food in one day as 35,000 people! This is because there are so many locusts that they can eat all the crops, plants, and leaves in an area very quickly.

If there are too many desert locusts in one place and they eat all the plants and crops, it can cause big problems for people who live there. This is because people rely on these plants and crops for food and to make money. The locusts can also cause damage to buildings and infrastructure if they land on them in big numbers.

To stop the desert locusts causing too much damage, people use special things called pesticides. These are like a type of spray that can kill the locusts but don’t harm other animals or plants. By spraying the affected areas with pesticides, people can stop the locusts from eating all the food and prevent further damage.
