ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Determiner (linguistics)

When we talk or write, we use different words to describe things around us. Some words we use to describe things are called determiners. These words tell us more information about the thing we are talking about, like how many there are, whose it is, or which one we mean.

For example, imagine you have a box of toys. You can use different determiners to describe the toys in the box.

- If you say "the toy," it means you are talking about a specific toy that you and the person you are talking to both know about.
- If you say "a toy," it means you are talking about any toy in the box, without specifying which one.
- If you say "my toy," it means you are talking about a toy that belongs to you.
- If you say "two toys," it means you are talking about a specific number of toys in the box.

So, determiners are like special words that give us more information about the thing we are talking about, helping us to be more clear and specific in our communication.
