Diabetic Papillopathy is when a person with diabetes has a funny looking nerve in their eye called the optic nerve. When you look in the back of your eyeball, you can see this nerve that connects your eye to your brain. But for someone with diabetic papillopathy, this nerve can look swollen or kind of like it's bleeding.
This can happen because when someone has high blood sugar levels for a long time, it can damage the blood vessels that bring blood to the nerve in the eye. And when the blood vessels are damaged, it can make the nerve look weird.
Now, this can be not so good for someone with diabetes because if their nerve looks funny, it can affect their eyesight. So, if someone with diabetes notices that their vision is getting blurry or weird, they should go to the doctor to get checked out.
But the good news is, if someone with diabetic papillopathy is able to control their blood sugar levels better, their nerve might start to look better too. The nerve can also get better on its own over time. But it's always important to get checked out by a doctor to make sure everything is okay.
