ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Diagnosis of exclusion

Hey kiddo! Do you remember playing that mystery game where you have to guess who did it by eliminating suspects one by one? That's a little bit like what doctors do when they try to figure out what's wrong with a patient.

Sometimes, they don't know exactly what's causing the problem. They use something called a diagnosis of exclusion. This means they rule out all the things that could be causing the problem until they're left with only one possible explanation.

It's like saying, "It's not this, it's not that, so it must be this other thing." By process of elimination, doctors can often figure out what's wrong even when they're not sure at first.

It's important to remember that this process can take a while, and sometimes doctors might need to do some tests or experiments to figure out what's going on. But in the end, they'll help to make you feel better!
