Dial-up Internet access

Dial-up internet access is like making a phone call to the internet with a special number using a computer. Just like you dial your friend's phone number to talk to them, you dial your internet number. When you connect to the internet with dial-up, your computer talks to another computer through the phone line.

It’s kind of like a big game of telephone. When you talk to your friends using a phone, your voice travels through the phone line to their phone. When you access the internet using dial-up, your computer sends information like pictures, videos, and websites through the phone line to the internet’s computer.

However, the telephone line wasn’t built for big amounts of data. Instead, it was built to carry people's voices. That's why dial-up internet is really slow compared to internet we use today. Pages can take a long time to load and videos need to buffer.

It was a helpful tool back in the day, but today we use faster and more modern ways of internet like wireless internet and fiber optics.
