Diary studies in TESOL

Okay kiddo, have you ever kept a diary or journal where you write down things that happened to you each day? You know, like what you did, where you went, or how you felt? Well, some teachers who teach people how to speak English as a second language also use diary studies in their teaching.

Here's how it works: instead of just asking their students questions in class or giving them homework, the teacher asks them to keep a diary or journal. In this diary, the students write down things they learned in class, any questions they have, and things they did outside of class to practice their English.

Then, the teacher reads through these diaries and can get a better idea of how each student is doing. They can see what things the students are struggling with or what things they seem to be improving on. This helps the teacher plan future lessons that will better help each individual student.

So, diary studies are just like keeping a journal, but for a class. It helps the teacher understand how each student is doing and what they need help with. It's like having a secret conversation with the teacher, but you get to write it down instead of talking out loud.
