Dieselgate is a name given to a scandal where the German car manufacturer Volkswagen was found to have deliberately put software in some of their cars that made it appear as if they were polluting the environment less than they actually were. This software made it so that when the cars were tested by regulators they would pass, but in real world driving they would actually pollute more than allowed. Volkswagen was made to pay a lot of money to people who had bought the cars, because they paid for something that wasn't what was advertised.
