ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Digital television transition in the United States

Have you ever watched TV and noticed that sometimes the picture is really clear and sometimes it's not? That's because TV signals are sent through the air and sometimes they get scrambled up and make the picture fuzzy.

Well, the government decided to make a big change to how TV signals are sent. They wanted to make sure that everyone was able to get a really clear picture all the time, and they wanted to use less space in the airwaves to make room for other things like cell phones and the internet.

So, they made all TV stations switch from sending their signals in the old way to sending their signals in a new way called digital. This meant that all TVs needed to have a special box called a digital converter box or a new TV that works with digital signals.

They even gave everyone a special coupon to help pay for the converter box so they didn't have to spend a lot of money.

Now, when you watch TV, the signal comes in really clear all the time and there are even more channels to choose from because there's more space in the airwaves!
