ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Digital-to-analog converter

Okay kiddo, do you remember how we can watch videos on our phones or tablets? Those videos are actually made up of tiny little dots called pixels that are all different colors. Now, our phones and tablets are digital devices, which means they understand the language of zeros and ones, like a secret code.

But what if you want to show those videos on an old TV that doesn’t understand the digital code? That’s where a digital-to-analog converter comes in. It’s like a translator that turns the digital code of the video into a language the old TV can understand.

The digital-to-analog converter takes each zero or one and turns it into an electrical signal that can be sent to the TV. The TV receives the electrical signals and uses them to create the colors and images we see on the screen.

So basically, a digital-to-analog converter helps us turn something digital (zeros and ones) into something analogue (electrical signals) that an old TV can use to show videos. And that’s how we can still watch our favorite videos even on old TVs that don’t understand the digital code!
