ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dijet event

Imagine you and your friend are playing catch with a ball. You throw the ball to your friend and they throw it back to you. This is like two particles, called quarks, in a proton (a particle inside an atom) throwing something called a gluon back and forth.

But sometimes, instead of just throwing the ball to each other, you and your friend throw the ball in opposite directions. This is like the quarks and gluon getting so energetic that they split apart and shoot away from each other. This is called a dijet event.

Scientists study dijet events to learn more about the fundamental particles and forces that make up our universe. They use big machines called particle accelerators to recreate these events and carefully measure the properties of the particles involved. By studying dijet events, scientists hope to uncover new physics and understand the mysteries of the universe.
