ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Direct estoppel

Sweetie, have you ever played a game with your friends where you make a promise to do something and then you have to keep that promise? Well, in the big grown-up world sometimes people make promises or agreements too, but they have to make sure that they keep their promise so they don't get in trouble.

Now, direct estoppel is when someone makes a promise or agreement with another person, and then that promise becomes really important. If the person breaks that promise, then they might not be allowed to do something else that they wanted to do. It's like if you promise your friend that you will share your toys with them, but then you don't share, you might not be able to play with their toys anymore. Direct estoppel is like that, but for grown-ups and it can happen in court.
