ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Direct numerical control

Direct Numerical Control (DNC) is like having a very special type of remote control to manage machines like lathes, mills, or drills. It helps people control machines that they cannot touch or reach by themselves.

For example, imagine you have a toy car that you want to control from a distance. You could use a remote control with buttons to tell the car what to do: go forward, turn left, or turn right. DNC works in a similar way, but with bigger and more complex machines.

With DNC, people can control machines using a computer, which sends the commands to the machine directly, instead of having to use a person to operate the machine. This allows the machine to work faster, more accurately, and more efficiently. It also reduces mistakes caused by human error.

So, instead of having a person standing next to a machine, reading numbers from a sheet and manually typing them into the machine, the machine can read the codes directly from a computer through a cable, wifi or other communication methods. It is like giving the machine a brain to do the work, instead of relying on a person to do everything.

DNC is mainly used in manufacturing plants, where many machines need to be controlled at the same time. It helps produce items like cars, appliances, and electronics quickly and accurately.
