ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Disc shedding

Disc shedding is when the cells in our eyes that help us see things, called photoreceptor cells, break up and fall off like leaves from a tree. Imagine our eye like a big house with lots of little windows (our photoreceptor cells). When the cell's job is done, it gets old and falls off the house, just like a leaf falls off a tree in the fall. This is a natural process that happens to everyone's eyes, even though it might sound a bit strange. It's like when we lose our baby teeth and new ones grow in their place. In the case of our eyes, our bodies replace the old cells with new ones so we can keep seeing properly. So, it's just a natural part of our body's everyday activities.
