ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Discrete event simulation

Discrete event simulation is like a computer game. You can create a virtual world and control what happens in it. In this world, everything is made up of small chunks of time, called "events." You can decide exactly when each event happens, and what happens afterwards. For example, you could make a game where cars drive around a city, and every time they make a turn, an event happens where they change direction. By controlling when each event happens and what comes afterwards, you can create a realistic virtual world.
