ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dithering

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a picture on the computer that looks like it has a lot of little dots making up the picture instead of smooth lines? That's called "dithering".

Let's say you want to make a picture with only two colors: black and white. But what if the picture has a lot of shades of grey? That's where dithering comes in. Instead of just using solid black or white, we use a bunch of little dots of different shades of gray to make it look like there are more colors than just two.

It's kind of like if you had to color in a big area with a small crayon, you wouldn't be able to make it look smooth without making little dots or lines. Dithering is just like making those little dots or lines to make a picture look like it has more colors than it actually does.

It's important for things like printing pictures or making graphics for the internet. Without dithering, the picture could look pixelated (like little squares) instead of smooth.
