ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Divorce of same-sex couples

When two grownups who are married to each other decide they don't want to be married anymore and want to go their separate ways, it's called a divorce. Sometimes, two people who love each other and who are married happen to be the same gender. In that case, they are a same-sex couple.

Getting a divorce when you're a same-sex couple is pretty much the same as when you're a different-sex couple. Like when you're a kid and you and your friend fall out and you don't want to be friends anymore. Your parents would sit down with you and your friend's parents and you might even have to talk with a grownup who makes sure that everything is fair and that both you and your friend are happy with the decision.

When grownups in same-sex relationships want to get a divorce, they need to work out things such as where they will live, who will have to leave the house, who will take care of the pets, and how much money each person will get. Sometimes, grownups can't agree and a judge has to decide.

As with any divorce, it can be sad and difficult, but it can also help the grownups have a better life in the long run.
