ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Do-support

Do-support is like having a helper word to make a sentence better. It's kind of like when you need a grown-up's help to tie your shoes or zip up your jacket. Sometimes, when we talk or write, we need help making our sentences sound right or make sense.

Do-support is a helper word that we use to make a sentence a question or to add emphasis to it. For example, let's say you want to ask your mom if she wants to play a game with you. You could say "Mom wants to play a game with me?", but that might sound like you're telling her what you're doing instead of asking her. So, you could use the helper word "do" and say "Do you want to play a game with me?" That makes it more clear that you're asking a question.

We also use do-support when we want to make a sentence more strong or important. For example, if you really want to let your friend know that you love pizza, you could say "I do love pizza!" The word "do" makes the sentence sound more serious and like you really mean it.

Do-support can be a little confusing at first, but it's just like having a helper word to make your sentences better.
