ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dodging and burning

Ok kiddo, so you know when we color or draw and we want things to look a certain way, we sometimes use lighter or darker colors to create some shadows or highlights, right? Well, in photography, we use a similar technique called dodging and burning.

Dodging means making parts of the picture lighter, and burning means making parts of the picture darker. It's like using a magic wand to change how bright different spots are.

We can use this technique to bring focus to certain parts of a picture or create an overall mood. It's like painting with light!

So, let's say we have a picture of a flower, but the sunlight was too bright and parts of the flower look too white. We can use dodging to make those parts a little darker and bring out more detail. On the other hand, if we have a dark photo and want to bring out certain details, we can use burning to make those parts appear brighter.

It may seem like a small change, but it can make a big difference in how a photo looks. It's like adding some seasoning to food to make it taste better!

Overall, dodging and burning is a way to tweak a photo's brightness and contrast to make it look the way we want it to. It's like being a magician with a camera!
