ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dominant culture

So, have you ever been to a party where all the grown-ups seemed to be doing the same things and liking the same things? Like they were all listening to the same kind of music and talking about the same movies and TV shows? That's kind of like what dominant culture means. It's when a group of people who have a lot of power and influence in a society all like and do the same things, and those things become the "normal" way of doing things.

For example, in America, the dominant culture is often seen as white, middle-class, and Christian. That means that a lot of the things white, middle-class, Christian people like and do become the "normal" way of doing things. So, for example, the holidays they celebrate and the foods they eat might become more popular and celebrated than other holidays and foods from different cultures.

Sometimes, dominant culture can be really good at bringing people together and creating a sense of community. But it can also be bad, because it can make people from different cultures and backgrounds feel left out or like they don't belong. That's why it's important to try to learn about and appreciate different cultures, so that everyone feels welcome and included.
