ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Domingo Bordaberry

Domingo Bordaberry was a man who lived a long time ago in a country called Uruguay. He was a very important person because he was the president of Uruguay between 1972 and 1976, which means he was the leader of the country during that time.

Being the president is a big responsibility because you have to make good decisions that will help the country and its people. Unfortunately, some people didn't like the decisions Domingo Bordaberry made, and they were very upset with him.

In 1973, Domingo Bordaberry took a very important decision that changed the way the government worked in Uruguay. He made a law that allowed the military to take control of the government and rule the country. This was called a military dictatorship, and it meant that the military had all the power and were in charge of everything, even if people didn't like it.

During this time, many people were hurt or killed by the military because they didn't agree with what they were doing. People weren't free to say what they thought, and they were scared all the time.

Luckily, in 1985, the military dictatorship ended, and the people of Uruguay could finally live in a free country where they could speak their minds and vote for their leaders. Even though Domingo Bordaberry made some bad decisions in the past, we can learn from them and make sure we never let something like a military dictatorship happen again.
