ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Donald Kirkpatrick

Donald Kirkpatrick was a teacher who came up with a way to tell if learning is happening when people go to school, or work. He said there are four parts to it.

The first part is to see if people like the class or the work they are doing. Are they happy and engaged? That's important because if people don't like what they are doing, it will be hard for them to learn.

The second part is to see if people are actually learning something new. Are they able to do things they couldn't do before or know things they didn't know before? That means they are learning.

The third part is to see if people can use what they learned to do their job better or to make their life better. So if someone learned how to cook a new dish, can they cook that dish on their own and have it taste good?

The fourth part is to see if it's worth it. Did it make a positive change in their life or in their work? Was the time and energy spent worth the outcome?

Kirkpatrick's way is a way to see if people are really learning and if their learning is making a difference in their life or in their work.
