ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dongba

Dongba is something like a writing system used by the Naxi ethnic group, who live in China. It is special because it combines both pictures and writing to represent their language. Just like how you learn to write letters and words at school, the Naxi people learn to draw pictures to represent their words.

The pictures are called glyphs, and they can represent different things like people, animals or objects. When many glyphs are put together, they can make a message. The Naxi people use this writing system mainly for religious and cultural purposes to record their customs, beliefs, and history.

The amazing thing about dongba is that it has been passed down from generation to generation and is still used by some Naxi people today! So, even though it's not used by everyone, it still holds a special significance for the Naxi people and is a unique way for them to communicate and remember their history.
