Dredging is when we take big machines called dredgers or excavators and use them to dig up the ground at the bottom of rivers, lakes, or harbors. This can help to make the water deeper or wider so that big boats and ships can travel more easily. The machines scoop up mud, sand, and rocks and dump them somewhere else. Sometimes, people dredge to find valuable things like gold or other minerals that might be hiding in the ground under the water. Basically, dredging is a lot like scooping ice cream out of a bowl, except instead of ice cream, we're scooping up dirt and rocks from the bottom of the water.
