ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dry run (testing)

Okay buddy, imagine you’re playing a new game with your friends. Before you start the game, you want to make sure you understand all the rules and know how to play. So you and your friends decide to do a practice round without actually playing the game.

That’s the same thing as a dry run in testing!

Dry run is like a “practice round” for testing. It’s where you go through the steps of a process to see if it works, without actually executing the process.

For example, let’s say you’re a chef at a restaurant, and you need to make a new dish for the menu. Before you actually make it for customers, you might do a dry run where you go through every step of the recipe to make sure it turns out how you want it to. That way, when you make it for the customers, you know it will be delicious!

Dry runs in testing work the same way. It’s like going through every step of a plan to see if there are any problems. If there are any problems, you can fix them before actually carrying out the plan. That way, everything goes smoothly and there are no surprises later on.

So think of a dry run like a “practice round” for testing. It helps you find and fix any problems before you actually execute the process, so everything goes smoothly when you do.
