ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dual-licensing

Dual-licensing is like having two different sets of rules for how people can use something. Imagine you have a special toy that you really like, but you want to let other kids play with it too. You make two sets of rules: one set for your friends and another set for strangers. Your friends can play with the toy for free, but strangers have to pay to use it.

In the same way, when someone creates a piece of software or content, they can use dual-licensing to give different rules to different people. They can make one set of rules that say the software or content is free to use for some people, like students or non-profits, and another set of rules for people who want to make money off of it, like companies.

This gives the creator more control over who can use their work and how they can use it. And it also means that different people can use the same thing in different ways, depending on what they want to do with it.
